Want to learn how to take care of your lawn in the summer? We provide some tips below.

The summer heat in Florida can be detrimental to your lawn’s health, but with the proper care, you can ensure that your grass stays green. If you have noticed brown patches, bugs, or other bad signs for your lawn’s health, here’s what you need to do.

How to Take Care of Your Lawn in the Summer: 5 Critical Tips

Practice Proper Mowing Techniques

When you dust off the mower for the warm season, the first thing you need to do is make sure that it is set up properly. If it’s been a long time since you have had your mower blade sharpened, now might be the time to do so. Rather than make a clean cut, a dull blade tears and bruised your grass, which can make it vulnerable to disease organisms, such as Gaeumannomyces graminis var. graminis (a.k.a. take-all root rot).

Also be sure your mower blade is set to cut your grass high. High grass in the summer months shades the soil from losing water to evaporation.

Water Your Lawn Enough…But Not Too Much

Speaking of water, you need to make sure you are giving your lawn at least 1 inch of water per week. Be sure to take precipitation into account to avoid overwatering. If you overwater, you could be creating an environment that is kinder to weeds than it is to your grass.

Treat for Pests and Weeds

If you do notice weeds starting to sprout on your lawn, you need to act fast to keep them from spreading. You can weed by hand or use a treatment, depending on your preferences.

Pests that can harm your lawn also come out in summer, so if you see anything making a meal out of your grass, be sure to talk to a professional.

Feed Your Grass the Good Stuff

Your lawn may not get all the nutrients it needs to thrive from the soil. Annual fertilization will help to add what is missing. Organic fertilizer is best to avoid attracting pests and harming other plants. Check with your lawncare specialist to learn more.

Check out our certified organic fertilization program here!

Let Your Lawn Breathe

If your turf is Bermuda, St. Augustine, or Zoysia, now is the time to aerate your lawn. Aeration allows your lawn better access to nutrients and water, which is essential for healthy grass.

Snakes and Toads: Nature’s Garden Pest Control https://lovepowerx.com/snakes-and-toads-natures-garden-pest-control/ Mon, 14 Sep 2015 15:01:48 +0000 https://lovepowerx.com/?p=5642 PowerX provides a slew of pest control and South Florida lawn care services.  We have an excellent staff trained to help our clients get rid of unwanted bugs or help you maintain a healthy yard. Did you know that animals can also prove to be a form of pest control? It seems unusual, but knowing which animals could be used to control your pest issues could also save you some money. Typically a snake or a large toad will cause most people to react in horror, which may lead to killing the animals. However, these animals are considered some of the most effective in providing pest control without having to spend a dime. The garter snake, for example, is easily recognizable by its trio of yellow stripes and tends to spend its time near vegetables. It may look scary at first, but the snake is actually docile and will eat garden pests like meadow voles, slugs, caterpillars, and sowbugs. The green snake, another docile animal, consumes grasshoppers as well as hornworms. Toads can consume anywhere between 50 to 100 insects a day, including snails, beetles, grubs, and cutworms. These amphibians are typically active during the evening hours as they prefer […]

Even though they act as natural pesticides, toads and snakes won’t provide a full fledged solution to a pest problem that’s gotten out of hand.  If this is the case, we encourage you to use the services of a reputable pest control company such as PowerX, which guarantees to solve any type of pest problem you may have.  Nonetheless, the next time you see one of these amphibians and intend to kill it, you may wish to let it do its thing and in return it will help to keep your garden mostly free from unwanted critters. Be careful with dogs and cats around the frogs as they may be dangerous to these pets.

The brown rat (also known as the common rat, street rat, sewer rat, Hanover rat, Norway rat, brown Norway rat, Norwegian rat, or wharf rat), is the most well-known and common of the species. The rodent has coarse brown or grey fur and its body and tail length can get up to 10 inches long. While the male rat weighs an average 12 ounces, the female is much smaller, clocking in at a mere 9 ounces. Most professionals believe the Norwegian rat was first introduced in northern China but, currently the creature has migrated to all continents except Antarctica. Interestingly, this particular animal is the dominant presence out of all the other types in its species in North America and Europe, additionally, the rat is known to dwell wherever humans live, especially in urban areas. With selective breeding practices, the rodent has made the laboratory rat and pet rats. This species is nocturnal and a good surface and underwater swimmer. In addition, it can climb slim, round, and metal poles for several feet, and can also dig very well, making this animal smart but a thing of nightmares. […]

Tip #5:  Another great hack, take garden twine and put the ball in a small clay pot.  Pull the end of the twine through the hole, and leave the pot upside down.  Now isn’t that a handy and simple way to ensure there is always twine available?

Insect Proofing Your Home Inside OutAll residents in South Florida have come to know and love that with good weather comes bugs. With there being no winter season, the near-constant warmth and sunshine means insect infestations are a yearlong problem. As the leader in South Florida Pest Control, PowerX knows a thing or two about how to protect your home against the constant barrage of bugs.

Seal Your Home Inside and Out – Making sure the exterior and interior of your house is completely sealed is very important in ensuring that your home stays bug free.  So make sure you install and maintain screens on all doors and windows, put weather stripping and/or caulk around all the doors (a good rule of thumb is to remember if you can see any light through the doors or windows then bugs will be able to get in, as well).  Also, make sure that all of your utility lines and appliance vents are sealed and that any cracks in your home’s foundation are covered. Finally, put critter-proof mesh on the vents of your crawl spaces to keep out raccoons, squirrels, and mice, as they can carry all types of unsavory insects with them.

Keep Your Yard Debris Free – Mulch, leaf litter, and other garden debris can provide refuge to lots of different insects. So, keep any lawn clippings and mulch away from the foundation of your house. Make sure you mow your lawn frequently, keeping the grass closest to your house at a short length. Moreover, keeping your trees and shrubs pruned on a regular basis, which will ensure that no bugs can get near your home.

The above recommendations are helpful in ensuring a successful pest control program for your home or business.

LamsonSouth Florida offers the ideal climate for maintaining beautiful gardens and verdant lawns. But there are plenty of challenges too, with plenty of pests and diseases thriving in this tropical environment as well. With years of experience in helping homes, yards, and communities across the region look better, PowerX knows how to keep your lawn and house safe from the common pest, disease, and weather issues that every homeowner must face.

Below are a few common issues that we have found most property owners to face.

Lawn Issue No. 1: A small, dead spot on your lawn that is surrounded by rich, dark green grass. This is usually indication that a dog may have made a pit stop or two on your lawn, and unfortunately while the go to solution is to keep the dogs from off your lawn, it can be a hard thing to do as it’s not very easy to control other people; however, PowerX has what it takes to restore these dead spots to their former greenery.

Lawn Issue No. 2: Dead spots appearing and expanding on your lawn. These  can be caused by a number of disease-causing fungi. A variety of lawn diseases can be eradicated by simply adjusting the amount of water and fertilizer that you use or even adjusting the times that you water and/or apply fertilizer. No matter what solution you choose, it’s always a good idea to get a second diagnosis from a lawn care professional like PowerX before deciding on a lawn treatment plan.

Lawn Issue No. 3: Brown areas or dry spots. The bane of every gardener, these issues occur because of soil that has been flattened down by excessive foot traffic, or because of improperly adjusted, clogged, or broken sprinklers.  The best way to fix this issue is to create a designated trail for your visitors to use and/or to fix your sprinklers. Only a dedicated and careful assessment by specialists like PowerX can determine if this is the cause, however.

Lawn Issue No. 4:  A shady garden is the best friend to moss, but to grass it can be a mortal enemy.  While excessively shady areas are a great place for moss to grow, it can be a horrible place for grass to thrive.  The best way to keep your grass areas from thinning is to check the pH level of the soil.  If the pH level turns out to be ok, then pruning your trees in the surrounding area could be the only solution that you need, however, if the pH level isn’t ok then you might want to try reducing the amount of water that that particular area receives, or switch to a type of grass that can thrive better in the shade, like palmetto sod. You can even remove the grass from that area completely and replace it with ground covering that is more shade tolerant, like a pachysandra or a vinca.

These are just a few of the issues that homeowners face in trying to keep their lawn in pristine condition.
